Best Jazz Clubs in NYC: Where to Hear Live Jazz

Basements on West 10th Street, a supper club on Broadway at 106th, a skyline room above Columbus Circle and a parlor in a Sugar Hill apartment. New York still has more live jazz on a weeknight than most cities get in a month. The trick is picking the right room for the night you actually want.

The short answer: for a first big night, go to the Village Vanguard if you want to listen and the Blue Note if you want a famous name and a table. Birdland is the easy call around Broadway. Smoke is the best dinner-and-jazz room, and Smalls keeps going after everyone else has shut. Below is how the jazz clubs NYC visitors ask about actually differ: who books what, what a night really costs, and which neighborhood to build it around.

Quick Picks

The Best Jazz Clubs in NYC, by the Night You Want

Classic first night

Village Vanguard

A wedge-shaped basement that has run since 1935 and still books the people serious fans fly in for. Two sets, no food, no fuss. Just the music.

Famous institution

Blue Note

The name on the T-shirt. Big headliners, a full kitchen and a West 3rd Street address that puts the rest of the Village a short walk away.

Serious listening

Village Vanguard · Smalls · Mezzrow

Rooms where people come to hear the solo, not talk over it. Mezzrow is the piano-trio version.

Dinner and jazz

Smoke

A real supper club on the Upper West Side. Dinner sets are built around an entrée per person, and the room is small enough that every table is close.

Date night

The Django

A low-lit Tribeca cellar under the Roxy Hotel with cocktails, four seatings a night and a reservation system that takes the guesswork out.

Budget night

Tomi Jazz · Smoke’s lounge

Tomi’s cover is $10 Monday to Thursday. At Smoke, the bar and lounge need no ticket and carry no minimum.

Late night

Smalls · Dizzy’s late sessions

Smalls runs late sets into the small hours. Dizzy’s adds 10:45 PM sessions Thursday to Saturday with no reservation needed.

Greenwich Village

The West 10th–West 3rd loop

Blue Note, Vanguard, Smalls, Mezzrow and Zinc Bar are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.

Near Times Square

Birdland · Jazzcultural

Both are on Restaurant Row blocks of West 44th and West 46th, a few minutes from most Broadway theaters.

Staying outside Manhattan

Ornithology · Sistas’ Place

A vegan jazz bar in Bushwick and a Saturday-night institution in Bed-Stuy. Both are worth the trip in their own right.

Before you book No two clubs work the same way. Some sell assigned tables, some sell admission and seat you in arrival order, and some take no reservations at all. Minimums can be one drink, two drinks, $20 or a full entrée. Age rules run from all ages to 21+ at the bar. Read the “how booking works” line on each club below before you buy.

The rooms

The Best Jazz Clubs in NYC, Room by Room

What each room is like, who it suits, and the practical details that decide whether your night goes smoothly.

Greenwich Village · 131 W 3rd St

Blue Note Jazz Club

The famous one, and it earns the name more nights than not.

When people say “blue note nyc,” they mean this narrow room off Sixth Avenue, with tables packed so close you will share elbow space with strangers. The draw is the booking: genuine headliners, crossover names and week-long residencies that sell out early. Blue Note Greenwich Village is a dinner-and-show room, so expect the clink of plates during the first tune.

The thing people misread is the seating. A ticket buys a type of seat (table or bar), not a particular table. Seating is first come, first served, with no exceptions, and parties arriving separately may not sit together. The rest of the capacity is standing room.

  • Shows 8:00 PM (doors 6:00) and 10:30 PM (doors 10:00); Sunday brunch show at 1:30 PM (doors noon)
  • Minimum $20 food-or-drink per person, per show, at tables
  • Ages All ages at tables; the bar is 21+
  • Access The performance floor is accessible; restrooms are upstairs by stairs only. Wheelchair users should contact the club at least a day ahead.
  • Good to know Student tickets are sold at the door for select shows. All sales are final. No audio or video recording.
Go if you want a marquee name and a meal in one stop. Skip if you hate tight seating or want total silence.

How to book: buy blue note nyc tickets on the club’s own site or at the box office. Arrive at doors if you care where you sit.

Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village, New York City
Blue Note Jazz Club is a Greenwich Village landmark and one of NYC’s most famous destinations for live jazz.
West Village · 178 7th Ave S

Village Vanguard

The room serious listeners line up for.

The village vanguard sits down a steep red-awninged staircase in a triangular basement with photos of past players on the walls. There’s no kitchen, so it’s just the band, a drink and one of the best-sounding small rooms anywhere. If you only see one set in New York, this is the safest bet.

Tickets are online only; the club doesn’t take reservations by phone or email, and online sales close an hour before showtime. Seats are not assigned. Seating opens at 7:00 PM for the 8:00 set and 9:30 PM for the 10:00, so arrive early if you want sightlines. Sold out? A standby line usually forms 30 to 45 minutes before each set, with no guarantee of entry.

  • Sets 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM
  • Minimum One drink per person on top of admission (soft drinks and water count)
  • Food None served, and outside food isn’t allowed
  • Ages 15 and up
  • Groups Parties of five or more pay a 20% service charge; eight is the most seated together
  • Access Not wheelchair accessible: entry is down 15 steps. If anyone in your group can’t manage stairs, Birdland or Dizzy’s Club are better choices.
Go if the music is the whole point. Skip if you want dinner, or you’re planning to chat through the set.

How to book: buy on the Vanguard’s own site. Tickets bought within 48 hours of the show are final sale.

Theater District · 315 W 44th St

Birdland Jazz Club & Birdland Theater

The Broadway-night jazz club.

Birdland jazz club runs two rooms in one building. The Jazz Club is the ground-level room with the bigger bookings. Birdland Theater, downstairs, is a smaller cabaret-style space with its own bar and a lot of singers and Broadway talent on the bill. Both serve the same Italian menu, and your ticket doubles as your dinner reservation.

Seating is first come, first served. Birdland releases seats 10 minutes after showtime if you haven’t arrived, unless you call or email first. Each performance runs about 75 minutes, which makes it practical before or after a Broadway curtain.

  • Minimum $20 in food or drinks per person
  • Ages 10 and up; everyone needs a ticket. Under-21s sit at tables or at the bar with an adult.
  • Access An elevator serves the lower level, and both rooms have accessible seating
  • Deals Students get 50% off weekday late sets with ID, booked by phone or email
  • Refunds All sales final; give 24 hours’ notice for a credit valid six months
Go if you have Broadway tickets the same night. Skip if you want a downtown, after-midnight scene.

How to book: Birdland says it sells only through its own calendar. Buy there, not from a reseller.

Birdland Jazz Club in Midtown Manhattan, New York City
Birdland Jazz Club is a legendary Midtown Manhattan jazz venue, just steps from Broadway’s Theater District.
West Village · 183 W 10th St (basement)

Smalls Jazz Club

Where the musicians go after their own gigs.

Smalls has been running since 1994 and presents three or more bands a night in a low basement off Seventh Avenue South. It feels less like a venue and more like a scene: younger players, veterans sitting in, a bar that’s part of the room. It’s also the late-night answer. Weekend late sets run into the small hours, long after the uptown rooms have closed.

You can buy smalls jazz club tickets ahead (your name is on the door list) or walk in if there’s room. Ticket holders should arrive 30 minutes early for the advance line. Seats are first come, and if you arrive after a set starts, you may be moved to the next one.

  • Sets About an hour each; seating starts 30 minutes before
  • Charges A music charge added to your bar tab, plus one drink per person per set (non-alcoholic counts)
  • Ages All ages welcome, though the club doesn’t recommend very young children; IDs checked at the bar
  • Refunds None; date exchanges with 24 hours’ notice
  • Bonus Most nights stream free on SmallsLIVE, so you can preview the room
Go if you want to see where the scene actually hangs out. Skip if you need a reserved table for a group.
West Village · same West 10th St block as Smalls

Mezzrow

The piano room.

Smalls’ sister club opened in 2014 as a room built around a Steinway, booking piano trios, duos, singers and guitarists. It’s a separate venue from Smalls, not an overflow room. It’s quieter, more intimate and one of the best date rooms downtown if you both actually like to listen. Tickets run through the same SmallsLIVE calendar.

Go if you like your jazz up close and acoustic. Skip if you want horns and volume. Walk up the street to Smalls.
Upper West Side · 2751 Broadway

Smoke Jazz & Supper Club

The best dinner-and-jazz night in the city.

Smoke jazz club has two separate spaces, and mixing them up is the most common mistake. The listening room is ticketed, with seated sets and a kitchen worth eating at. The bar and lounge is separate, needs no ticket and never has a minimum. That makes it one of the better cheap ways into a serious jazz room’s orbit.

  • Dinner shows At least one entrée per person, billed at the end of the set
  • Standing room Heavily discounted, with a $20 consumption minimum and no dinner required
  • 10 PM sets Not dinner sets; $20 minimum per person
  • Hours Wednesday to Sunday from 4 PM; happy hour at the bar
  • House rules One set per ticket, and conversation kept to a whisper during the music. Children 5 and up are welcome in the listening room with their own ticket.
Go if you want dinner and the band without a second stop. Skip if you’re staying downtown and want to bar-hop after.
Tribeca · Roxy Hotel, 2 Sixth Ave

The Django

Candlelight, cocktails and a reservation you can count on.

The django nyc is a vaulted cellar under the Roxy Hotel built for a dressed-up night out. The music leans swing, trad and straight-ahead, and the room is as much a cocktail destination as a jazz club. Four seatings a night means you can fit it around dinner almost anywhere downtown.

  • Cover $35 per person Sunday to Thursday, $40 Friday and Saturday, $25 after midnight Friday and Saturday, plus a two-drink minimum (as posted by the Roxy)
  • Booking Reservations on Resy; groups of five or more contact the hotel
  • Sets Roughly an hour each, with the last weekend set ending after 1 AM
Go if it’s a date and the drinks matter as much as the band. Skip if you’re watching the budget; cover plus two cocktails adds up fast.
Midtown East · 239 E 53rd St

Tomi Jazz

The low-key, low-cover basement.

Tomi jazz nyc is a small basement bar with a full food and drink menu and live music every night. The cover is $10 per person Monday to Thursday and $15 Friday to Sunday, which makes it one of the cheapest sit-down nights at any jazz club Manhattan has. The catch is that there are no reservations.

  • Sets Sun–Thu 6:00–8:30 PM and 9:00–11:30 PM; Fri–Sat 5:30–9:00 PM and 9:30 PM–1:00 AM
  • Entry First come, first served; maximum five per group; two-hour table limit
  • Ages Under-21s allowed; under-18s with a parent or guardian
Go if you want a cheap, relaxed set near Grand Central. Skip if you’re six or more, or you can’t stand a wait at the door. Come right at opening on weekends.
Columbus Circle · Broadway at 60th St

Dizzy’s Club

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s club, with Central Park behind the band.

Dizzy’s sits high in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, and the band plays in front of a window over the park and the skyline. Sets are polished, the menu is seasonal, and it’s the easiest room on this list for a special occasion with parents in tow.

  • Sets Monday–Saturday 7:00 and 9:00 PM; Sunday 5:00 and 7:30 PM
  • Late sessions Thursday–Saturday at 10:45 PM, around $15 at the door, no reservation needed
  • Booking Walk-ups are limited for main sets; reserve ahead

Planning a bigger Lincoln Center night? See our Lincoln Center venue guide and hotels near Lincoln Center.

Times Square · Broadway at 51st St

The Iridium

Jazz, blues and guitar heroes, a few blocks from your hotel.

Iridium nyc books across jazz, blues, fusion and rock, which makes it a good pick for a group with mixed tastes. Preferred seating covers the front of the floor and the mezzanine rail; everything else is general admission, seated in arrival order within each section. There’s a full kitchen and bar, and only ticket holders for that night’s show are admitted.

  • Ages 12 and up
  • Access The entrance is down one flight of stairs; staff will escort ticket holders to an elevator on request
Restaurant Row · 349 W 46th St

Jazzcultural

The new Midtown listening room from the Smalls team.

Opened in spring 2026 by Spike Wilner, who also runs Smalls and Mezzrow. It brings the Village listening-room approach to Restaurant Row: a roughly 90-seat room with clear sightlines and a café that serves by day. Evening sets run at 7:00 and 9:00 PM, with a 10:30 PM late show, and advance seats are sold per set on its site. For a Broadway crowd, that late show lines up neatly with most curtain times.

Still new, so policies may shift. Check the club’s own page before you go.

Greenwich Village · W 3rd St

Zinc Bar

The looser, Latin-leaning Village bar.

A dim bar below West 3rd Street, known for Latin jazz, Brazilian nights and late sets. It’s more bar than temple, so you can talk between tunes. Covers vary by show, so check the night’s listing.

Downtown

Best Jazz Clubs in Greenwich Village & the West Village

If you search jazz clubs village nyc, this is the cluster you’re looking for: the jazz clubs Greenwich Village is famous for. Blue Note, the Vanguard, Smalls, Mezzrow and Zinc Bar all sit within about a 15-minute walk of each other, and the streets around them are full of late kitchens. No other neighborhood lets you see two different bands on a single night without a cab.

Theater District & Midtown

Jazz Clubs in Midtown NYC: Before or After a Broadway Show

These are the jazz clubs Midtown NYC visitors can actually reach on foot from a theater: Birdland on West 44th, Jazzcultural on West 46th and the Iridium on Broadway at 51st. Tomi Jazz is the Midtown East option near Grand Central, and Dizzy’s is at the north edge at Columbus Circle.

Jazz before the show

An early set only works if it ends at least 30 minutes before your curtain. Birdland’s sets run about 75 minutes, so an early dinner set is doable before an 8 PM show if the timing on that night’s listing fits. Check the start time; don’t assume.

Jazz after the show

The easier version. Most evening Broadway shows let out between 10 and 10:45 PM, and late sets at Birdland, Jazzcultural or Dizzy’s often start right around then. Book a late set, walk over, and you get dinner at intermission pace instead of a rush.

If you want a jazz bar midtown nyc locals use for a single drink and a set, Tomi Jazz is the cheapest and most relaxed. Pair it with our Theater District guide, best post-show restaurants and last-minute Broadway tickets.

Uptown

Harlem Jazz Clubs: Where to Hear Live Jazz Uptown

Harlem is where bebop was worked out after hours in the 1940s, and the neighborhood still matters. If you’re searching for the jazz clubs Harlem still has, be careful with older guides. Several famous rooms are gone, and most of the live scene now runs in smaller, more personal venues. Here’s what’s actually running as of October 2026.

Living room jazz

Bill’s Place

A tiny brownstone club at 148 W 133rd St on the old “Swing Street,” run by saxophonist Bill Saxton, who often greets guests at the door. It holds about 40 people and the music is mostly unamplified straight-ahead jazz. Check its own site for show nights and booking.

A Sugar Hill tradition

Marjorie Eliot’s Parlor Jazz

For more than three decades, Marjorie Eliot has hosted Sunday-afternoon concerts in her apartment at 555 Edgecombe Avenue. ABC7 reported in February 2026 that the music still plays every Sunday. It’s one of the most moving jazz experiences in New York; find current details through Parlor Entertainment’s social pages.

Dinner and music

Red Rooster Harlem

Marcus Samuelsson’s restaurant at 310 Lenox Avenue has live music on its calendar, with jazz programming in the bar. It’s an easy way to pair Harlem food with a set. Check the calendar for jazz nights specifically.

With a guide

Harlem jazz tours & concerts

If you’d rather have someone else handle the route, guided evenings bundle history with live sets: the Harlem Jazz Tour, the Jammin’ Jazz Evening and the Harlem Jazz Series concert.

Closed, despite what you’ll read elsewhere: Minton’s Playhouse (W 118th St), the room where bebop was born, reopened in 2024 but is listed as permanently closed again. Showman’s on 125th Street hasn’t reopened since the pandemic. Neither is a current option.

Across the river

Jazz Clubs in Brooklyn

The best jazz clubs Brooklyn has right now are less about famous marquees and more about neighborhood rooms, younger players and lower covers. If you’re staying in Brooklyn, these are worth building a night around rather than crossing back to the Village.

Ornithology Jazz Club · Bushwick6 Suydam St. A cozy bar with a vegan menu and live jazz most nights. It feels like the Village did decades ago, at Bushwick prices.
Sistas’ Place · Bed-Stuy456 Nostrand Ave. A community jazz institution now in its 32nd season of Saturday-night shows. Its site lists $30 in advance (CashApp) or $35 cash at the door; reserve by phone at (718) 398-1766.
Barbès · Park SlopeMusic every night, much of it donation-based. Expect jazz alongside Latin and world music, so check what’s on.

Staying near Barclays or Downtown Brooklyn? See our Downtown Brooklyn guide for where to eat before you head out.

In Bushwick, a set at Ornithology can roll straight into a club night: House of Yes and Elsewhere are a short ride away near the Jefferson St L stop. See our nightclubs guide for door policies and what to wear.

Live Jazz NYC Tonight: How to Find a Set

Searching for live jazz music NYC-wide at 6 PM? There’s always live jazz in Manhattan tonight. The question is whether you can get in. Here’s how to search jazz tonight nyc without wasting the evening.

  1. Start with the club’s own calendar. Every room above posts its schedule on its own site, and that’s the only listing that’s always current. Aggregators lag.
  2. “Available” online doesn’t mean a good seat. At first-come rooms (Vanguard, Blue Note, Birdland, Smalls), a ticket gets you in, not a particular table. Arrive at doors.
  3. Know your walk-in options. Tomi Jazz takes no reservations, Dizzy’s late sessions need none, and Smalls sells walk-in tickets when there’s room. The Vanguard runs a standby line 30–45 minutes before each set.
  4. Weeknights are your friend. Tuesday to Thursday late sets are the easiest same-day tickets in town. Friday and Saturday early sets at famous rooms are the hardest.
  5. Watch the cutoffs. The Vanguard’s online sales close one hour before showtime.

How Much Do NYC Jazz Clubs Cost?

The number on the ticket is rarely the number on the bill. Here are the charges to expect:

Show ticketAdmission for one set, bought ahead. It doesn’t usually reserve a specific seat.
Cover / music chargeThe same idea, sometimes paid at the door or added to your tab (Smalls, Tomi, The Django).
ReservationA held table at a set time (The Django on Resy; Dizzy’s). Not every club offers one.
Drink minimumOne drink at the Vanguard and Smalls (per set), two at The Django.
Food-or-drink minimumA dollar amount you must spend: $20 per person at Birdland and at Blue Note tables.
Dinner showSmoke’s dinner sets require an entrée per person.
Fees, tax & tipOnline fees at checkout, then 8.875% NYC sales tax and a tip on food and drinks.
RefundsMostly no. Blue Note, Birdland and Smalls are final sale; some allow date exchanges with notice.

What Will the Night Really Cost?

Plug in a cover and what you’ll order. Illustrative only, not a quote from any club.

Estimated total$163about $82 per person

Worked example (illustrative): two people at a $35 cover with a two-drink minimum at $18 a drink. Covers: $70. Drinks: $72. Sales tax at 8.875% on the drinks: about $6.39. A 20% tip on the drinks: $14.40. That’s about $163 for a “$35 show,” before any online booking fees.

On a budget

Cheap Jazz Clubs in NYC (That Are Still Good)

Tomi Jazz$10 cover Monday to Thursday, $15 Friday to Sunday. Arrive at opening.
Smoke’s bar & loungeNo ticket and no minimum. You won’t be in the listening room, but you’re in the building, with happy hour.
Dizzy’s late sessionsThursday to Saturday at 10:45 PM, around $15 at the door.
Student dealsBirdland takes 50% off weekday late sets; Blue Note sells student tickets at the door for select shows.
Smoke standing roomHeavily discounted, with a $20 minimum and no dinner required.
Free previewSmallsLIVE streams most nights free, so you can hear a band before you pay.

The trade-off with cheap jazz clubs nyc-wide: lower prices usually mean less control over where you sit, a shorter stay or a noisier room. Weigh that against the band.

Date night

Best NYC Jazz Clubs for Date Night

First, decide whether you want to talk or listen. A strict listening room like the Vanguard is magic if you both love the music. If you’re hoping to chat through the set, you’ll spend the night being shushed.

Talk between tunes

The Django for cocktails, Zinc Bar for a looser bar night, or Tomi Jazz for something low-key.

Dinner and a band

Smoke for the best food, Dizzy’s for the view, Birdland near Broadway.

Just listen, together

Mezzrow‘s piano room, or the Vanguard with an early-arrival plan.

Know the room

Jazz Bars vs. Jazz Clubs in NYC

Searches for jazz bars nyc, jazz lounge nyc and jazz venues nyc cover very different nights. The best jazz bars NYC has let you come and go; the clubs want you seated for the set. Know which kind of room you’re booking:

Listening roomThe band is the point; talk is discouraged. The Vanguard, Smalls, Mezzrow.
Supper clubDinner and a seated set. Smoke, Birdland, Dizzy’s, Blue Note.
Cocktail loungeLive jazz with cocktails and a bit more chatter. The Django, Tomi Jazz.
Bar with a bandNo ticket ritual; come and go. Zinc Bar, Smoke’s lounge.
Jam sessionPlayers sit in; loose, late and fun. Watch the Smalls and Jazzcultural calendars.
Background jazzPlenty of jazz restaurants nyc lists include rooms where the trio is ambience. Fine for dinner, not for listening.
Daytime

Jazz Brunch in NYC

The easiest real jazz brunch nyc option is at a jazz club: Blue Note‘s Sunday brunch show starts at 1:30 PM, with doors at noon. Plenty of restaurants advertise jazz brunch with a trio in the corner. That’s background music, which is fine, but check the band is actually booked before you plan a jazz brunch nyc sunday around it.

Uptown, Sundays are for gospel. The Harlem tour with a Sunday gospel concert pairs well with a late soul-food lunch.

First visit

First-Timer Tips for NYC Jazz Clubs

How far ahead to bookFor famous names or Friday and Saturday sets, book a week or more out. Weeknight late sets often sell the same day.
When to arriveAt doors. First-come seating means early arrivals get the good tables.
Where to sitCloser isn’t always better. In small rooms, a seat with a clear line to the piano beats the front row behind a bass amp.
What to wearNo club here enforces a dress code. Smart casual fits everywhere; The Django is the place to dress up.
TalkingTalk between tunes, not over the solo. Smoke asks for a whisper during sets.
PhonesNo flash, and no audio or video recording at Blue Note or Birdland. Some artists ban photos entirely.
AccessThe Vanguard has 15 steps and no wheelchair access. Birdland has an elevator; Iridium will escort you to one.
AgesVanguard 15+, Iridium 12+, Birdland 10+, Smoke 5+. Bars are 21+.
Getting homeLate sets end after midnight. Read up on getting home late in NYC and Uber vs. taxi.
Buy directMost clubs sell only on their own site or at the door. Birdland says it uses no other platforms. Resold “club tickets” may not be honored.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a Vanguard set for someone who can’t manage stairs.
  • Treating Smoke’s lounge and listening room as the same thing.
  • Arriving 10 minutes late to Birdland and losing your seat.
  • Turning up at Tomi Jazz with eight people.
  • Assuming the cover is the whole bill. It’s not; add the minimum, tax and tip.
  • Trusting a “Harlem jazz clubs” list that still sends you to Minton’s.
