Hop On Hop Off NYC: Bus Tickets, Routes & Best Options

Big Bus vs TopView, what every ticket really covers, where the loops go, how long you’ll wait at a stop, and which night tour you’re actually booking.

From $39–$62 2 operators running 19 Big Bus stops Night tours 7pm

Hop on hop off NYC tickets buy you a seat on open-top double-deckers that loop past the big sights. Get off wherever you like, look around, and catch a later bus. In fall 2026, two companies run them: Big Bus and TopView.

Plenty of advice online still describes Gray Line and City Sightseeing routes that no longer exist, so this guide sticks to what’s operating now. We cover which ticket covers which loop, how long you’ll really wait at a corner, which night ride is which, and when the subway is simply the better deal.

Quick answer

How a Hop-On Hop-Off Ticket Works

  1. Buy online (usually a few dollars cheaper) or from uniformed staff at a stop.
  2. Activate it in the company’s app when you board. The clock starts then, not when you buy.
  3. Ride any bus on the loops your ticket covers, getting off and back on as often as you like until it expires.
  4. Watch the clock. These are daytime services. Big Bus’s last full Downtown loop leaves at 4:30pm.

Open-top sightseeing buses travel through Times Square, one of the most popular stops on NYC hop-on hop-off bus tours. Visitors can explore Manhattan landmarks with flexible sightseeing routes.
Our picks

Best Hop On Hop Off Bus NYC Picks, by Traveler

We picked these on what each ticket actually includes, published schedules, and how riders rated them, not on commission. Prices are “from” adult prices checked October 21, 2026.

Best overall

Big Bus Discover, 24 hours

from $62

Downtown loop only, but that’s where most first-timer sights are: Empire State Building, Flatiron, SoHo, the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street and the World Trade Center. A bus comes about every 30 minutes.

Best budget

TopView Downtown & Uptown

from $39

The lowest entry price in town, for TopView’s shortest pass. Reviews are weaker, averaging 3.0 against Big Bus’s 4.2 on GetYourGuide, and you’ll need the TopView app.

Best two-day

Big Bus Essential, 48 hours

from $83

Both loops plus the two-hour night tour, which costs $67 on its own. If you’d do the night ride anyway, this is the easiest value call on the page.

Best at night

Big Bus Night Tour

from $67

Two hours, a live guide, the Manhattan Bridge and Midtown lit up. It’s a continuous ride, not hop-on hop-off, and it leaves Stop 1 at 7pm.

Best with a guide

Brooklyn & DUMBO Bus + Walk

from $69

Big Bus’s three-hour live-guided tour into Brooklyn, with a walk through DUMBO. It runs Fridays to Sundays at 2pm and pauses January through March.

We may earn a commission when you book through GetYourGuide links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Prices change by date and were checked October 21, 2026.

A New York City night sightseeing bus offers a different perspective on Manhattan’s illuminated streets and landmarks. Unlike daytime hop-on hop-off routes, many night tours follow a continuous route without reboarding stops.

Heads up

What happened to Gray Line and City Sightseeing?

Gray Line New York stopped running its own hop-on hop-off buses. Since 2021, hop-on hop-off tours sold under the Gray Line name have been operated by Big Bus. City Sightseeing New York was Gray Line’s licensed brand here, so any map, stop list or “Big Bus vs City Sightseeing” comparison you find is describing a service that’s gone. Gray Line still runs its own escorted motorcoach tours and day trips.

Head to head

Big Bus Tours NYC vs TopView NYC

These are the only two companies running hop-on hop-off loops in Manhattan right now. Both cover Downtown and Uptown. The real differences are in how often the buses come, what the longer tickets add, and how riders rate them.

Ratings are GetYourGuide scores for each company’s main New York hop-on hop-off listing on October 21, 2026. Both listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

Our call

Book Big Bus if you have one or two days and want the more predictable ride: published timetables, a full-fleet wheelchair lift policy and a much stronger review record. Look at TopView if price matters most, or if you’re staying four or five days and want Brooklyn and a night tour rolled into one pass. Expect thinner reviews, and plan your Uptown stops around a bus that may only come once an hour.

What you’ll pay

NYC Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Ticket Prices

Headline prices are “from” prices for one adult on the cheapest date. Pick your date, add kids and look at the last screen before you pay. That total is the real number.

24-hour

Big Bus Discover covers the Downtown loop for 24 hours from activation. Activate at 2pm and you can ride until 2pm the next day, but the buses stop by late afternoon.

48 and 72-hour

Both Big Bus loops plus the night tour. Big Bus multi-day tickets must be used on consecutive days. You can’t save day two for later in the week.

Calendar-day tickets

The Big Bus ticket inside Go City passes is “two consecutive calendar days.” Start it at 3pm Tuesday and it ends when service stops Wednesday, not at 3pm Wednesday.

Bundles

Bus tickets packaged with the Empire State Building, a Circle Line cruise or the Liberty Island ferry. Often the cheapest way to get both if you’d buy both anyway.

“From” prices on bigbustours.com and GetYourGuide, October 21, 2026. Big Bus charges a lower child fare for ages 3–12 and lets kids 2 and under ride free.

The math that matters

The 48-hour Essential is $16 more than the 24-hour ticket and includes a night tour that costs $67 on its own. And the Empire State + Circle Line bundle costs the same $99 as the 72-hour Explore. You give up a day of bus time and get the Empire State Building’s 86th floor instead.

Buying on the street? Big Bus listed its 24-hour ticket at $65 full price against $62 online, so booking ahead saves a little. Only buy from staff in official company uniform. If someone approaches you in Times Square with a cheaper “same bus” deal, walk on.

Does the bus go to Brooklyn?

Not on a regular Manhattan ticket, from either company. Big Bus’s Brooklyn Bridge stop is on the Manhattan side at Park Row. You can walk the bridge from there, but you’ll come back on foot or by subway. To actually tour Brooklyn on a bus:

  • Big Bus Brooklyn & DUMBO: a separate three-hour live-guided bus and walking tour from Stop 1. It runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm, from $69, and is paused December 31 to March 31.
  • TopView Discover passes: TopView’s 72, 96 and 120-hour passes include a Brooklyn tour. The shorter passes don’t.
  • Night tours: both companies’ night rides cross the Manhattan Bridge for skyline views, but you don’t get off.

How Often Do NYC Hop-On Hop-Off Buses Run?

Big Bus publishes about every 30 minutes on the Downtown loop and about every 60 minutes Uptown. Treat those as planning numbers, not promises. Downtown, missing a bus costs you a half-hour at most. Uptown, it can cost you an hour on a Fifth Avenue corner, so check the app before you leave the Met.

The last departures matter more than the first ones. The final Downtown loop leaves Stop 1 at 4:30pm and isn’t due at Hudson Yards until about 5:45pm. If you hop off at the World Trade Center at 4pm, check that a bus is still coming before you go into the museum.

TopView riders describe the same split: Downtown buses come often, while one GetYourGuide reviewer found out at the hotel that the Uptown loop only ran hourly. Parades, protests, street fairs, UN week in September and Fifth Avenue’s holiday crowds in December can all slow both companies down.

Night Bus Tour NYC: Which One Are You Booking?

Every night bus tour in New York is a continuous panoramic ride. You don’t hop off. You sit up top for 90 minutes to two hours while the city lights up around you. Here’s how the current ones compare.

Year-round

Big Bus Night Tour

  • Leaves: 7:00pm, Stop 1, 7th Ave & W 48th St (arrive by 6:30)
  • Length: about 2 hours, ending back at Stop 1
  • Commentary: live English-speaking guide
  • Sights: Times Square, the Theater District, Empire State Building, Flatiron, Little Italy, the Manhattan Bridge, Radio City
  • Price: from $67, or included in the 48h and 72h tickets

Big Bus’s service page lists one 7pm departure, while some of its ticket pages also mention 8pm. Check the time in the app.

Dec 3 – Jan 4

Big Bus Holiday Lights

  • Leaves: 6:00pm and 7:00pm from Stop 1, daily except Dec 31
  • Length: about 90 minutes, ending at 42nd St & Broadway
  • Commentary: live English-speaking guide
  • Sights: the Rockefeller Center tree, the rink, the Fifth Avenue windows, Saks
  • Price: from $69, with a holiday treat at the finish
TopView

TopView Night Tour

  • Leaves: 6:00pm and 8:00pm, 712 7th Ave (47th–48th Sts)
  • Length: about 90 minutes, no stops
  • Commentary: sold with a guide, but several reviewers say theirs was recorded
  • Sights: Grand Central, the UN, the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn waterfront views, SoHo, the Village
  • Price: included in TopView’s 72-hour+ Discover passes

Our pick is the Big Bus night tour, for the live guide alone. If you’re already buying a 48-hour Big Bus ticket, don’t book it separately, because it’s included. Sit upstairs and bring a layer: it gets windy on the Manhattan Bridge even in summer.

Beyond the loop

Other NYC Bus Tour Options (Not Hop-On Hop-Off)

Searching for a New York bus tour turns up more than double-deckers. If you’d rather sit with a guide than ride a loop, you have a few choices.

Panoramic night rides

The night tours above: one seat, one loop, live or recorded commentary.

Guided neighborhood tours

Big Bus’s Brooklyn & DUMBO tour mixes a New York City tour bus ride with a guided walk.

Escorted coach tours

Gray Line still runs fully guided motorcoach tours of the city, with one guide and one bus all day.

Walking instead

For one neighborhood in depth, a walking tour beats any bus. See our NYC walking tours guide.

Honest take

Is Hop-On Hop-Off Worth It in NYC?

Worth it if…

  • It’s your first day and you want the lay of the land, with commentary
  • Someone in your group can’t do long walks or the subway stairs
  • You’d enjoy the open-top view as a sight in itself
  • You’re staying in Midtown and want Downtown in one easy go
  • You’d book the night tour anyway, which is included at 48 hours

Skip it if…

  • You’re comfortable on the subway, which is faster between sights
  • You have a tight list and little time; traffic eats hours
  • You want evenings free: daytime loops wind down by late afternoon
  • It’s deep winter and the upper deck sounds like punishment
  • You’d rather spend $124 for two on a museum or a show

Our honest read: one day of Big Bus Downtown is a good orientation. Two or three days of it usually means you’re sitting in traffic when you could be walking the High Line. Use the bus to get your bearings, then switch to the subway.

Plan it

One-Day vs Two-Day Hop-On Hop-Off Tickets

One day · Downtown
  1. 9:00 Board at Stop 1 and ride straight down. Morning is the time to cover ground.
  2. ~10:00 Off at World Trade Center for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum (book a timed entry).
  3. ~1:00 Lunch, then back on at WTC.
  4. ~1:30 Off at Hudson Yards for the High Line or Edge.
  5. ~4:00 Ride back to Midtown, or walk the High Line south.

That’s two real hop-offs. Add a third and you’ll be racing the 4:30pm last loop.

Two days · add Uptown
  1. Day 1 The Downtown plan above, then the 7pm night tour.
  2. 10:00 Day 2: Uptown loop from Stop 14.
  3. ~10:25 Off at Rockefeller Center for Top of the Rock.
  4. ~12:45 Next bus to The Met. Give it three hours.
  5. ~3:30 Walk into Central Park and catch a late bus at Columbus Circle, or just walk back.

Uptown buses come about hourly, so plan around the bus times. Don’t just turn up at the stop.

Want more structure? Our NYC in one day and NYC in a weekend plans work with or without the bus.

Hop-On Hop-Off and NYC Attraction Passes

Go City includes the Big Bus two-day Downtown and Uptown ticket in its All-Inclusive, Explorer and Essentials passes. It runs for two consecutive calendar days, not 48 hours, so start it in the morning. New York CityPASS doesn’t include a hop-on hop-off bus as of October 2026.

Whether a pass beats buying the bus ticket on its own depends on what else you’d visit. We run those numbers on our NYC attraction passes page, so we won’t repeat them here.

Practical stuff

Families, Accessibility and Practical Tips

Kids

Big Bus: child fare ages 3–12, free at 2 and under, and riders under 15 must be with someone 15 or older. Our NYC with kids guide has more ideas.

Strollers

Big Bus asks you to fold strollers and store them on the lower deck. Expect to carry a toddler upstairs.

Wheelchairs

Big Bus says its whole New York fleet has wheelchair lifts, rated to 650 lb. Give it 48 hours’ notice for other needs. The upper deck may not be possible. TopView doesn’t publish details, so call first.

Weather

Both run rain or shine. The upper deck is open, and the lower deck is covered. Big Bus may pause service in severe weather.

Seats

First come, first served. Front of the top deck fills first; board at a quieter stop rather than Times Square if you want it.

Commentary

Big Bus: 6 languages with free headphones. TopView: 11 languages. Bring your own earbuds as backup.

Boarding

Download the app before you arrive, add your booking, and activate it at your first stop. TopView doesn’t allow large bags.

Bring

Sunglasses and sunscreen in summer, a hat and gloves from November, a charged phone for the app, and water.

Best Time of Day for a Bus Tour

Morning gives you the most hop-offs before the last loop. Board at 9am and you have a full day. Midday is when Midtown traffic is heaviest, which makes it a good time to be off the bus at a museum or lunch. Late afternoon brings the best light from the top deck in fall and winter, but you’re riding near the last loop. Evening belongs to the night tours. In summer, the open deck gets hot at midday. From December on, the wind on the avenues is serious.

Common Booking Mistakes

  • Buying a daytime pass and expecting it to cover the night tour. The 24-hour ticket doesn’t.
  • Assuming every ticket covers Uptown. Big Bus’s 24-hour Discover is Downtown only.
  • Reading “48 hours” as two days whenever you like. Multi-day tickets run on consecutive days.
  • Expecting Brooklyn on a Manhattan ticket.
  • Following an old printed map with Gray Line or City Sightseeing stops.
  • Hopping off at 4pm and missing the last loop back.
  • Assuming the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty is included. Check the listing.
  • Buying from a street seller who isn’t in official company uniform.
Bottom line

Which NYC Bus Ticket to Book

One day in town: Big Bus Discover, Downtown only, starting at the first bus. Two days: Big Bus Essential, because the night tour alone is worth most of the difference. Long stay on a budget: TopView’s longer Discover passes. Want the bus and the Empire State Building: take the $99 bundle. After the bus, stay out for the evening: our Broadway shows guide and Times Square restaurants are a short walk from Stop 1.

NYC Hop-On Hop-Off Bus FAQ

What is the best hop on hop off bus in NYC?

For most first-time visitors, Big Bus is the safer pick. It publishes fixed timetables, its whole New York fleet is wheelchair accessible, and on GetYourGuide it held a 4.2 rating from about 6,600 reviews when we checked on October 21, 2026. TopView is cheaper, starting around $39, but its listing averaged 3.0 from about 570 reviews. TopView makes more sense on a longer stay, because its 72-hour-plus passes add a Brooklyn tour and a night tour.

How much is the hop on hop off bus in NYC?

On October 21, 2026, Big Bus started at $62 for a 24-hour Downtown ticket, $83 for 48 hours on both loops with the night tour, and $99 for 72 hours with a Circle Line cruise added. TopView started around $39 on GetYourGuide for its shortest pass. Prices move by date. Big Bus charges a child fare for ages 3 to 12, and kids 2 and under ride free.

Is Big Bus or TopView better?

Big Bus wins on published schedules, review scores and accessibility. TopView wins on price and on longer passes that bundle a Brooklyn tour, a night tour and a Statue of Liberty cruise. If you have one or two days and want the smoother ride, book Big Bus. If you are in town four or five days and price comes first, TopView’s longer passes are worth a look.

Is hop on hop off worth it in NYC?

It is worth it on your first full day if you want an overview of Manhattan with commentary, or if long walks are hard for someone in your group. It is not worth it if you are comfortable on the subway and already know what you want to see, because a $3 subway ride is faster than the bus for getting from one sight to the next.

How long is a New York hop on hop off bus tour?

On Big Bus, the Downtown loop takes about 90 minutes and the Uptown loop about 75 minutes if you stay on the whole way. Midtown traffic can stretch both. Most people who hop off two or three times spend the better part of a day on one loop.

Where do I board the hop-on hop-off bus in NYC?

You can board at any stop on your ticket’s route. Big Bus’s main staffed stop is Stop 1, outside M&M’s World at 7th Avenue and West 48th Street. TopView’s main boarding point is 2 East 42nd Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues near Grand Central.

How many stops does the NYC hop-on hop-off bus make?

Big Bus runs 19 numbered stops: 13 on the Downtown loop and six more on the Uptown loop, which also calls at One Times Square. TopView does not list its stop count on its GetYourGuide page, so check its app for the current stops.

Where can I find the hop on hop off NYC route and map?

Big Bus posts its current route map and stop times on its New York routes page and in its free app, which also shows live bus locations. TopView’s stops and live bus tracking are in the TopView Sightseeing app. Skip printed maps and older blog maps, because stops change.

Does the hop on hop off bus stop at the Statue of Liberty?

No bus goes to Liberty Island. Big Bus’s Wall Street and Statue of Liberty stop, at Broadway and Wall Street, is the one to use for walking down to the ferries at Battery Park. The ferry ticket is separate unless you buy a bundle that includes it.

Does a New York City tour bus go to Brooklyn?

Not on a standard Manhattan hop-on hop-off ticket. Big Bus sells a separate guided Brooklyn and DUMBO bus and walking tour on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm, paused from December 31 to March 31. TopView includes a Brooklyn tour only in its 72-hour and longer Discover passes. Both companies’ night tours cross the Manhattan Bridge.

Can I use my hop on hop off ticket for two days?

Only with a 48-hour or longer ticket. Big Bus tickets start when you press Activate in its app, and multi-day tickets have to be used on consecutive days. The 24-hour Discover ticket ends 24 hours after activation. The Big Bus ticket included with Go City passes runs for two consecutive calendar days instead.

Does a New York night bus tour let you hop on and off?

No. Big Bus’s two-hour night tour, its seasonal holiday lights tour and TopView’s night tour are all panoramic rides. You board, ride the full loop and get off at the end, with no stops along the way to explore.

When does the Big Bus night tour NYC run?

Big Bus’s service page lists one departure at 7:00pm from Stop 1, 7th Avenue and West 48th Street, and asks riders to arrive by 6:30pm. Some Big Bus ticket pages also mention an 8:00pm departure, so confirm the time in the app when you book. The tour runs about two hours with a live English-speaking guide and starts around $67. It is included in the 48-hour Essential and 72-hour Explore tickets.

What happens if it rains on a NYC bus tour?

The buses run rain or shine, and the lower deck is covered. Big Bus says it may suspend service in very poor weather or during unplanned city events, and posts updates in its app. Bring a rain jacket if you want the upper deck.

Are NYC hop-on hop-off buses wheelchair accessible?

Big Bus says its entire New York fleet is wheelchair accessible, with lifts rated to 650 pounds, and asks riders who need other accommodations to contact it at least 48 hours ahead. The upper deck may not be possible for riders with limited mobility. TopView’s GetYourGuide listing gives no accessibility details, so contact TopView before you book.

Can you buy hop on hop off tickets on the day?

Yes. Big Bus sells tickets on the bus, from uniformed staff at its stops and online for same-day use. Online is usually a little cheaper. Big Bus listed its 24-hour ticket at $62 online against a $65 full price. Do not buy from anyone who is not in official company uniform.

Do CityPASS or Go City include a bus tour?

Go City’s All-Inclusive, Explorer and Essentials passes include the Big Bus two-day Downtown and Uptown ticket, valid for two consecutive calendar days. New York CityPASS did not include a hop-on hop-off bus as of October 2026.

Is the subway cheaper than hop on hop off?

By a lot. A subway or local bus ride costs $3, and paying with OMNY caps your spending at $35 in any seven-day stretch. A hop-on hop-off ticket is a sightseeing tour with commentary and open-top views, not a cheaper way to get around.

How often do the hop on hop off buses come in NYC?

Big Bus runs the Downtown loop about every 30 minutes and the Uptown loop about every 60 minutes. TopView riders report a similar pattern, with Downtown buses far more frequent than Uptown ones. Traffic, closures and events can stretch the gaps, so use the live tracking in the apps.

Are attraction tickets included with the bus ticket?

Not with a basic ticket. Big Bus’s 72-hour Explore ticket adds a Circle Line cruise, and Big Bus bundles on GetYourGuide add the Empire State Building or the Liberty Island ferry. TopView’s longer Discover passes add a Statue of Liberty cruise and Skyscraper Museum entry. Anything else you pay for at the door.

What happened to Gray Line and City Sightseeing New York buses?

Gray Line New York no longer runs its own hop-on hop-off buses. Since 2021, hop-on hop-off tours sold under the Gray Line name have been operated by Big Bus. City Sightseeing New York was Gray Line’s licensed brand in the city, so route maps and comparisons that still name it are out of date. Gray Line still runs escorted motorcoach tours.

What is the best bus tour NYC first-timers can take?

For a first trip, Big Bus’s 24-hour Downtown ticket covers the most famous sights on one loop, starting at $62. With two days, its 48-hour ticket adds the Uptown loop and the live-guided night tour, starting at $83. If you would rather have a guide the whole time, Big Bus’s night tour and its Brooklyn and DUMBO tour both have live guides.

Which New York bus tour has a live guide?

The daytime hop-on hop-off loops use recorded commentary. If you want a live guide, Big Bus’s two-hour night tour, its seasonal holiday lights tour and its Brooklyn and DUMBO bus and walking tour all have live English-speaking guides.

What hours do the NYC hop-on hop-off buses run?

Big Bus’s first Downtown bus leaves Stop 1 at 9:00am and the last full loop leaves at 4:30pm. The Uptown loop runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm from Stop 14. Big Bus runs daily except Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. TopView publishes its times in its app.
