Imitation of Life Musical Tickets & The Shed 2026 Guide
John Legend and Lynn Nottage’s new musical Imitation of Life begins performances at The Shed in Hudson Yards on November 21, 2026, with Adrienne Warren leading the cast. Whitney White directs. It opens December 3 and runs only through January 3, 2027.
The Imitation of Life musical is one of the biggest new-musical bets of the New York holiday season. It has a Grammy-and-Oscar-winning songwriter, a two-time Pulitzer winner writing the book, a Tony-winning star, and a six-week world premiere in a building most theatergoers have never been inside. This guide covers tickets, dates, prices, the cast and the story, and keeps the stage show separate from the famous films.
A big new musical about two single mothers, one Black and one white, and the daughters they raise together in the 1920s and ’30s.
Musical fans who like to see new work first, Adrienne Warren and Jessica Vosk fans, and anyone curious about John Legend writing for the stage.
Tony winner Adrienne Warren (Tina) leads a brand-new musical from a heavyweight creative team.
About six weeks of performances, then it closes. There’s no announced Broadway transfer, so this run is the only sure chance to see it.
Imitation of Life Tickets
All Imitation of Life tickets right now are for the world-premiere run at The Shed, November 21, 2026 through January 3, 2027. It’s a strictly limited engagement in a single building, so the calendar is short and the dates won’t move.
Search results for Imitation of Life are full of the 1934 and 1959 films. If you’re buying Imitation of Life musical tickets, the event should list The Shed at 545 West 30th Street and dates between November 21 and January 3.
The run sits in the busiest part of the theater year. Thanksgiving weekend, December Saturdays and the week between Christmas and New Year’s draw the most visitors, so those dates are the most competitive. If you need a specific date or seats together for a group, buy sooner. If you’re flexible, compare a few performances and seat sections side by side before choosing. Small differences in date can change which seats are left.
How Much Are Imitation of Life Tickets?
TDF lists the face-value range at $25 to $219. What you actually pay depends on the performance date, the seat location and what’s left when you buy. Fees aren’t included in that range, so treat it as a guide rather than an all-in price.
No TKTS discount is currently listed. As of October 2026, TDF shows no TKTS price for this production, and no rush or lottery has been announced. If The Shed adds a discount program during the run, we’ll add it here.
When Should You Buy Imitation of Life Tickets?
Previews
A brand-new musical is still being shaped during previews. Some people love seeing that. Others would rather wait for the locked version after opening. Thanksgiving weekend falls in this window.
Opening & Reviews
Opening night is December 3. Reviews follow, and a strong reception can change demand quickly for a short run.
Holiday Peak
Weekends in December and the days around Christmas are the busiest. Buy early if one of these is your date.
Final Week
School break, holiday visitors and a fixed closing date. Once January 3 passes, there’s no other announced place to see it.
- Compare several dates before settling on one.
- Compare sections, not just prices. A slightly cheaper seat isn’t a deal if the view is compromised.
- Lock in early if your date is fixed. Flexibility is the only real leverage you have on a limited run.

Imitation of Life Performance Dates
The weekly schedule shifts around the holidays, so check the exact curtain time for your date before booking dinner. If you see September or October dates elsewhere, that’s the original plan. The world premiere moved to this November–January run.
Imitation of Life Musical Cast
Adrienne Warren
Jessica Vosk
Cast and roles as of the September 2026 announcement. More casting is still to be announced, and understudies can go on at any performance. Peola is played by two actors at different ages. Adult Jessie hasn’t been announced yet.
Adrienne Warren in Imitation of Life
Warren won the Tony for playing Tina Turner in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, and she’s the main reason many people will buy a ticket. She plays Delilah, one of the two mothers at the center of the story and the one whose choices shape her daughter Peola’s life. Opposite her is Jessica Vosk, a powerhouse belter known to Broadway audiences as Elphaba in Wicked, as Bea. Expect the show to rest heavily on the two of them.
John Legend and Lynn Nottage’s Imitation of Life
John Legend
This is John Legend’s musical, a full stage score, not a concert or a tour stop. Legend has produced on Broadway before, but writing the score himself is a different job, and it’s the biggest question going in.
Lynn Nottage
Nottage is a two-time Pulitzer winner, for Ruined and Sweat. She also wrote the book for the musical MJ. Her book is why this version is expected to dig harder into race and class than a straight remake would.
Whitney White
White is a Tony-nominated director who now leads the world premiere. Early announcements listed a different director and earlier dates. Both are out of date.
Imitation of Life World Premiere
The run at The Shed is the musical’s world premiere, a new work in its first public production. That means two things for ticket buyers. First, the show may change during previews before it’s locked for opening night on December 3. Second, nobody can tell you what it’s like yet. You’re seeing it before the reviews, the cast album or any future life it might have. No Broadway transfer has been announced.
How Long Is Imitation of Life?
Imitation of Life runs about 2 hours and 40 minutes, including intermission. That’s a full-length musical, so eat beforehand and plan a later ride home than you would for a shorter show. Expect to walk out about 2 hours 40 minutes after curtain, so an evening show ends late in the evening.

What Is Imitation of Life About?
Two single mothers, one Black and one white, team up to build a better life for themselves and their daughters in the 1920s and ’30s. Delilah and Bea get further together than either could alone, but the world treats them very differently. The musical follows how race and class shape each woman’s life, and how those pressures pass down to their daughters, Peola and Jessie.
Fannie Hurst’s 1933 novel, later adapted into films in 1934 and 1959.
A new 2026 stage musical with an original score and a new book. Don’t assume it follows either film scene by scene.
Is Imitation of Life on Broadway?
No. The 2026 world-premiere production plays Off-Broadway at The Shed in Hudson Yards, not in a Broadway theater.
If you landed here searching for Imitation of Life Broadway tickets, you’ve found the right show. It just isn’t on Broadway. The names involved make people assume it is, and a team this size usually points toward Broadway. But no transfer has been announced. For now, The Shed is the only place to see it. Our Broadway vs Off-Broadway guide explains what the difference actually means for your night.
Is Imitation of Life Right for Kids?
The production lists it for all ages, and there are young characters in the cast. But the story deals directly with race, class and identity, and the runtime is 2 hours 40 minutes. It’s a better fit for teens than for young kids. For a holiday show aimed at younger children, see our best Broadway shows for kids.

Imitation of Life Reviews
Reviews of the musical aren’t out yet. Critics usually publish around opening night on December 3, and we’ll summarize the New York response here once they do.
Reviews of the 1934 and 1959 films don’t tell you anything about this production, so we won’t use them here.
Where Is Imitation of Life Playing?
Imitation of Life plays at The Shed, 545 West 30th Street in Hudson Yards. The Shed is the arts center with the movable outer shell at the north end of the High Line. It’s a long way west of Times Square, so allow more travel time than you would for a Broadway house.
The 7 train to 34 St–Hudson Yards is the closest stop, a few minutes’ walk away.
About a 15-minute walk west. That’s easy for LIRR, NJ Transit and Amtrak arrivals.
The Shed lists wheelchair access and an assistive listening system. Confirm specific seating needs with the box office.
For dinner, Hudson Yards and Chelsea are both close. Walk the High Line down to the theater, or catch sunset at Edge before the show. If you need a hotel nearby, see our guides to hotels near the Javits Center and Penn Station.
