Which NYC Helicopter Tour Fits You?

Of all the helicopter tours in New York, there are really only three kinds of flight worth comparing. Choose the shape of the flight first, then the operator.

The harbor hop12–15 min

Statue + skyline, done before lunch

Leaves Lower Manhattan, swings past the Statue of Liberty, runs up the Hudson to about Midtown and back. Subway to the door.

  • About $299–$304 per person with fees
  • Downtown Manhattan Heliport, Mon–Sat
  • Best for: tight schedules, first flights
Our pick17–20 min

The whole island, end to end

Same start, but the route keeps going up the West Side to the George Washington Bridge, with Central Park, Harlem and Yankee Stadium off the right side.

  • About $319–$334 per person with fees
  • Only $20–$30 more than the short flight
  • Best for: first-timers who want it all
The thrill16–30 min

Doors off, feet out, camera up

FlyNYON’s photo flights from Kearny, New Jersey. You’re harnessed in with the door open and the city straight below.

  • Advertised from $149 a seat, plus your ride there
  • Arrive 1 hr 15 min before takeoff
  • Best for: photographers, bucket-listers
Two rules most listings don’t spell out.

Tour flights from the Manhattan heliport stay over the water, so you see Central Park and Midtown from the Hudson, not from directly above. And they don’t fly on Sundays or after 5 p.m. If you want a night flight, a Sunday flight or a route over land, you’re flying from New Jersey.

Helicopter Tour NYC Cost: What You’ll Really Pay

The headline price is never the whole story. Here’s what an NYC helicopter tour price looks like once the extras are counted, per person, for shared seats.

Short · 12–15 min$299–$304Manhattan, fee included
Standard · 17–20 min$319–$334Manhattan, fee included
Extended · 25–30 min$334–$434Linden or Manhattan, fee included
Doors-off · 16–30 min$149–$330Kearny, plus your ride there
Private · your group$995–$2,200+Per aircraft, not per seat

What gets added at checkout

  • Heliport or facility fee. Manhattan departures carry one. Zip charges $40 a person, HeliNY $45 (it bundles a fuel surcharge in). Some resale listings now fold it into the displayed price, which is why the same flight can look $40 cheaper on one site than another.
  • Getting there. The Manhattan heliport is a short walk from South Ferry. New Jersey means a train plus a rideshare, or a drive. HeliNY’s Linden flights include a van from the Linden NJ Transit station.
  • Extras you can skip. Souvenir photos, GoPro rental, trip or weather insurance and flowers are all optional.
  • Change fees. FlyNYON charges $50 a person to reschedule more than 48 hours out and $75 inside 48 hours. HeliNY charges $50 to $100 inside 72 hours.

Helicopter tour NYC for 2: the real total

Here’s what two people actually pay for a short daytime flight, using today’s list prices:

Zip Liberty Harbor, Manhattan2 × ($259 + $40)$598
HeliNY New Yorker, Manhattan2 × ($259 + $45)$608
FlyNYON doors-off Experience, Kearny2 × $149 + round-trip ride$298 + transport

FlyNYON looks like half the price, and it often is. Just count the rideshare from Journal Square or Newark Penn, the hour and fifteen minutes you need to be there early, and the fact that flights are nonrefundable. For a couple staying in Midtown, that trip eats most of a morning.

Matchmaking

Best Helicopter Tour NYC: Which One Should You Book?

The most expensive flight isn’t automatically the best one. Here’s how we’d book for different travelers.

✦

First NYC visit

A 17–20 minute flight from Manhattan. You get the Statue, the skyline and the full West Side, and you’re back downtown for lunch.

⏱

Short on time

A 12–15 minute Manhattan flight. Book a morning slot so a weather delay doesn’t wreck the day.

$

Watching the budget

The cheapest seat is FlyNYON’s doors-off Experience if you don’t mind getting to Kearny. In Manhattan, the cheapest is Zip’s Liberty Harbor at $299 all-in.

◎

Photographers

Doors-off, no question. No glass, no reflections, and on the 30-minute Classic you have time to work a shot list.

♥

Couples & occasions

A night flight from New Jersey, or a private flight for two from Westchester. Shared flights seat you by weight, so you may not sit together.

↔

Want the most coverage

A 25–30 minute route adds the Verrazzano Bridge, Coney Island and southern Brooklyn to the full Hudson run.

☁

Nervous flyers

Stay doors-on, book the short flight and ask for the front seat at check-in. It isn’t guaranteed, but crews try.

★

Families with kids

Doors-on from Manhattan. Kids 2 and up need their own seat, and under-2s can fly on a lap. It’s an easy subway trip with a stroller.

Minutes matter

Short vs Extended: How Long Should Your Flight Be?

12–15

Harbor + Lower and Midtown West

Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, the Financial District, One World Trade Center, then north along the Hudson past Chelsea Piers and the Intrepid with Central Park in view, then back. This is the route most “Manhattan helicopter tour” listings sell.

17–20

Adds the whole West Side

The flight keeps going past the Upper West Side, Columbia and Grant’s Tomb to the George Washington Bridge and the Palisades, with Harlem and Yankee Stadium across the island. This is the best value of the lot.

25–30

Adds the outer harbor

HeliNY’s Deluxe and Zip’s Grand Island head south to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge for Staten Island, Coney Island and Brighton Beach before running the full Hudson. HeliNY’s 25–30 minute Linden flight approaches over the Verrazzano too.

The clock starts at takeoff and stops at landing. The pilot and air traffic control set the exact path, so landmarks can change on the day. If a particular sight matters to you, book the longer flight rather than hoping for it on the short one.

Doors off helicopter NYC

Doors-Off Helicopter Flights: What You’re Signing Up For

Those photos of sneakers dangling over Manhattan come from doors-off flights, and in NYC that means FlyNYON. It flies from a terminal at 78 John Miller Way in Kearny, New Jersey. It’s a photo flight, not a narrated tour. The pilot doesn’t follow a set route and steers toward the shots the passengers ask for in the briefing.

The flights

The NYC Helicopter Experience runs 16 minutes and stays mostly around Lower Manhattan and the harbor. The Classic runs 30 minutes and can reach Central Park. Six passengers per flight, and at least three must be booked for it to go.

The harness

You’re weighed, briefed and strapped into a harness tethered to the aircraft before boarding. Follow the crew exactly on every strap and clip.

Your camera

Bring one body and one lens, because lens changes, filters and hoods aren’t allowed in the air. Gimbals need pilot approval. FlyNYON rents cameras at the terminal.

What to wear

Fitted clothes and shoes that lace or strap on, with no flip-flops or slip-ons. In winter, dress like you’re going skiing. Below about 36°F the pilot may close the doors.

Who can fly

Under-18s need a parent or guardian to sign a consent form. Anyone over 310 pounds including gear buys a second seat, and 350 pounds is the hard limit. You need a photo ID.

The fine print

Flights are nonrefundable. Weather cancellations get a 12-month voucher unless you bought weather insurance. Arrive 1 hour 15 minutes early, or you lose the seat.

An open door adds risk that a closed cabin doesn’t. In 2018 a doors-off flight crashed in the East River after a passenger’s tether snagged a fuel switch. Pay attention in the briefing, keep loose straps and gear secured, and don’t book this one if you’re uneasy about it. A doors-on flight is still a great flight.

After the sun goes

Sunset and Night Helicopter Tour NYC Options

“Sunset” in a listing title doesn’t promise darkness. Three different things get sold under it:

Golden hour

A flight in the last hour before sunset. The light is warm, the towers glow, and photos are easy. Manhattan flights only get this in the short days of late fall and winter, because the heliport stops tour flights at 5 p.m.

Twilight

Takeoff around sunset and landing in blue hour. You get lights coming on and some color left in the sky. This is the most romantic slot, and it sells out first.

Full night

Times Square glowing from the Hudson, headlights streaming up the West Side Highway, and a lit-up Statue of Liberty. Phone photos through glass are tough at night, so this is one to watch more than shoot.

Every true night helicopter tour in NYC leaves from New Jersey. HeliNY flies evenings from Linden Airport, Friday through Monday. Zip Aviation sells a night skyline flight from Essex County Airport in Fairfield, from $275. FlyNYON lists sunset and later slots from Kearny. Check the exact takeoff time against the sunset time for your date before you book.

Where you actually take off

Manhattan vs New Jersey Departures

Downtown Manhattan Heliport (Downtown Skyport)

Pier 6 · 6 East River Piers

This is the only heliport in the city that allows sightseeing flights, and every helicopter tour from Manhattan starts here. It sits on the East River just north of the Staten Island Ferry terminal. In 2025 the city renamed it Downtown Skyport, though most operators and maps still use the old name.

  • Subway: the 1 train to South Ferry, about a five-minute walk according to HeliNY, or the R or W to Whitehall St. Allow about 30 minutes from Times Square, more after 4 p.m.
  • Hours: tour flights run Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are no Sunday tour flights.
  • Check-in: 30 minutes before at HeliNY (45 after 3:30 p.m.) and 45 minutes at Zip. Bring photo ID, and allow for a security check.
  • Bags: free lockers. Only phones, cameras and sunglasses go aboard at HeliNY.
  • Parking: none at the heliport. Use the garages around South Street and the Seaport. See our NYC parking guide.

Operators flying from here: HeliNY and Zip Aviation, plus other operators whose flights are sold through resellers. Since September 2025 the heliport has required every operator to pass an annual third-party safety audit.

Kearny, NJ

FlyNYON

78 John Miller Way. There’s no shuttle anymore. Take PATH to Journal Square or NJ Transit to Newark Penn, then a rideshare, or drive. This is the home of the doors-off flights.

Linden Airport, NJ

HeliNY

1101 W Edgar Rd, Linden. A free van runs from the Linden NJ Transit station, a straight shot from Penn Station. Flights here are longer (25–30 min), and HeliNY runs its night flights here.

Essex County Airport, NJ

Zip Aviation

Fairfield, NJ. It’s easiest by car, with easy parking. Zip sells its New Jersey day and night skyline flights from here.

Kearny, Linden and Fairfield are three separate airfields in three different directions, so don’t mix them up. If you’re staying near Penn Station, Linden is the easiest New Jersey trip. Our hotels near Penn Station guide covers that base.

The view from 1,500 feet

What You Can See From an NYC Helicopter

HeliNY says air traffic control keeps tour flights between about 1,500 and 2,000 feet. From there, here’s what’s reliably on the menu:

Every route

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

A face-on pass, not an overflight. HeliNY says helicopters stay about half a mile from Liberty Island.

Every route

One World Trade & the Financial District

Right off the heliport, so you see them on takeoff and landing.

Every route

Brooklyn Bridge & Governors Island

Close to Pier 6. The East River bridges line up behind you as you climb.

Every route

Midtown skyline from the Hudson

The Empire State Building, Hudson Yards and the Intrepid, seen side-on from over the river.

Most routes

Central Park

From Manhattan, seen across the Upper West Side from the river. NJ doors-off flights may fly closer.

17 min +

George Washington Bridge & Palisades

The north end of the island. This is the main reason to book the longer flight.

25 min +

Verrazzano Bridge & Coney Island

Only on the longest Manhattan routes and the Linden flights.

Helicopter tour Statue of Liberty views: how close you get

Close enough for a proper face-to-face photo, but not over the crown. If standing on Liberty Island is the goal, that’s the official ferry. Our Statue of Liberty tickets guide covers it. For a cheaper water-level view, a harbor cruise gets you close too.

The honest version

Are NYC Helicopter Tours Safe?

Thousands of people fly every week without incident, but sightseeing helicopters are small aircraft in some of the busiest airspace in the country, and New York has had fatal tour crashes. The most recent was on April 10, 2025, when a New York Helicopter Tours flight broke apart over the Hudson and six people died. The FAA shut that operator down within days. The NTSB investigation is still open, and in July 2026 investigators reported finding remains of geese on the wreckage. In 2018, a doors-off flight went down in the East River.

Since then, the Downtown Manhattan Heliport has added a required annual third-party safety audit for operators, and the City Council passed a law that will bar non-essential flights from city heliports from late 2029 unless the aircraft meet the strictest federal noise standards. Neither changes how you should choose today. Here’s what does:

  • Know who operates the aircraft. Book a company that owns and flies its own helicopters, and match the operator name on a resale listing.
  • Look for outside audits. HeliNY holds TOPS and Wyvern Wingman certifications, which require independent annual audits. Zip calls itself an FAA-certificated air carrier that owns, operates and maintains its aircraft. FlyNYON says its pilots get annual factory training and a yearly FAA check ride.
  • Take the briefing seriously, especially on doors-off flights.
  • Accept weather calls. A canceled flight is the system working.

No operator is risk-free, and we don’t rank any of them as the “safest.” We don’t have the comparative data to do that honestly.

Before you buy

Passenger Rules, Weight Limits and Kids

There’s no single NYC rule, so each operator sets its own. Here’s what HeliNY and FlyNYON publish:

Weight

HeliNY: 275 lb per passenger, and no seat belt extenders.
FlyNYON: 350 lb max, and a second seat over 310 lb including gear.
Everyone is weighed at check-in.

Seats

Seats are assigned by weight and balance. You can ask for a seat, but it isn’t guaranteed, and couples aren’t always seated together.

Kids & infants

HeliNY: 2+ pay full fare, under 2 fly free on a lap.
FlyNYON: lap infants on doors-on flights only, and under 18 needs a guardian’s signature.

ID

Adults need a government photo ID: a driver’s license, state ID or passport.

Pregnancy

HeliNY allows it and suggests checking with your doctor first. For doors-off, ask FlyNYON directly.

Accessibility

At HeliNY you need to transfer from your wheelchair into a seat with your knees bent. Staff can lift passengers under 150 lb, and heavier passengers need to bring help. Flag it when booking.

Plan B

Weather, Cancellations and Refunds

Fog, low cloud, heavy rain and strong wind ground flights, sometimes at the last minute. Light rain with good visibility usually doesn’t. Here’s how each policy works:

  • HeliNY: free changes more than 72 hours out. Inside 72 hours it’s $50 to $100 per person to reschedule, with no refunds. During peak periods, including late November through early January, cancellations become a 12-month flight credit.
  • Zip Aviation: free cancellation up to 24 hours before on its own booking site.
  • FlyNYON: nonrefundable. It makes a go or no-go weather call four hours out and issues a 12-month voucher. Optional weather insurance turns that into a refund.
  • Booking platforms: many listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Read the terms on your specific listing.
Book the flight on day one or two of your trip.

That leaves room to rebook if the weather turns. Don’t schedule it on your arrival or departure day, and don’t stack a nonrefundable dinner or show right behind it.

Best time for helicopter tour NYC flights

Best Time of Day and Year to Fly

Morning

Often the clearest air and the most rebooking room. FlyNYON suggests 9 or 10 a.m. for short trips.

Midday

Bright, even light that’s easy for phone photos. There’s more haze in summer.

Late afternoon

Warm light on the West Side towers. From November to January, the last Manhattan slots fly into sunset.

Fall & winter

Crisp, clear days. HeliNY flies a seasonal 45-minute fall foliage flight from Linden up the Hudson. Doors-off in winter is cold, so dress for it.

Verdict

Are NYC Helicopter Tours Worth It?

Yes, if you know what you’re buying. A helicopter ride over NYC costs about $20 a minute, and it buys a view no building or boat can give you: the whole island, harbor and rivers in one sweep. Most people step off grinning.

No, if $600 for two is a stretch. A top observation deck plus a harbor cruise costs a fraction of that and covers more of what first-timers come for. Top of the Rock frames the Empire State Building and Central Park, and a boat gets you close to the Statue. If you’re already doing several big attractions, check whether a CityPASS or Go City pass makes the rest of the trip cheaper.

Helicopter Tour Booking Tips

  1. Read the departure address. “NYC helicopter tour” can mean Pier 6, Kearny, Linden, Fairfield or White Plains.
  2. Check the exact minutes. They count air time only. Plan for 60 to 90 minutes door to door in Manhattan, and longer from New Jersey.
  3. Compare all-in prices. Add the $40 to $45 heliport fee unless the listing says it’s included.
  4. Check the cancellation window for your exact listing: 24 hours, 72 hours or nonrefundable.
  5. Check weight and age limits before paying, not at the counter.
  6. Plan the trip there. Allow time for the subway to South Ferry, or PATH or NJ Transit plus a ride.
  7. Pick an early-trip date on a weekday if you can. Sundays fly from New Jersey only.
  8. Shared or private? Shared flights seat up to six strangers. Private means buying the aircraft.

NYC Helicopter Tour FAQ

How much is a helicopter ride in NYC?

Shared sightseeing flights from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport start at $259 a seat, plus a mandatory $40 to $45 heliport or facility fee, so plan on roughly $299 to $304 a person for 12 to 15 minutes. Longer 17 to 20 minute flights run about $319 to $334 all in, and 25 to 30 minute routes about $429 to $434. FlyNYON’s doors-off flights from Kearny, New Jersey are advertised from $149 a seat, but you also pay to get there. Private flights for your group start around $995 for two and climb fast.

What is the best helicopter tour in NYC?

For most first-timers, a 17 to 20 minute flight from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport is the sweet spot. It covers the harbor, the Statue of Liberty and the full West Side up to the George Washington Bridge, and you can get there on the subway. If photography is the point, FlyNYON’s doors-off flight is the more memorable ride. If you want lights, take a night flight from New Jersey.

Is a 15-minute helicopter ride worth it?

It is if your main goal is the Statue of Liberty and the Lower Manhattan skyline from the air. A 12 to 15 minute flight covers the harbor and runs up the Hudson to around Midtown before turning back. It feels quick, and the time counts from takeoff to landing, so it goes by fast. If Central Park, the George Washington Bridge or Upper Manhattan matter to you, pay the extra $20 to $30 for the 17 to 20 minute route.

Where do NYC helicopter tours depart?

Manhattan sightseeing flights all leave from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, now called Downtown Skyport, at Pier 6, 6 East River Piers, near South Ferry and Battery Park. New Jersey flights leave from Kearny (FlyNYON), Linden Airport (HeliNY) and Essex County Airport in Fairfield (Zip Aviation). A few private and shared flights leave from Westchester County Airport in White Plains.

Can you fly over the Statue of Liberty on a helicopter tour?

No. Every helicopter tour that features the Statue of Liberty flies past it, not over it. HeliNY says airspace rules keep its helicopters about half a mile from Liberty Island. You still get a clear, face-on view and good photos, especially from a window seat on the harbor side.

Are doors-off helicopter tours available in NYC?

Yes. FlyNYON runs doors-off photo flights from its terminal in Kearny, New Jersey, currently a 16-minute flight and a 30-minute flight. You wear a harness, sit with your feet near the open door and shoot with whatever camera you bring, with no lens changes or filters allowed in the air. When local temperatures drop below about 36°F, the pilot may fly with the doors closed. The Manhattan heliport operators fly doors-on only.

Can you take a night helicopter tour in NYC?

Yes, but only from New Jersey. Tour flights from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport stop at 5 p.m., so true after-dark flights leave from Linden (HeliNY) and Essex County Airport in Fairfield (Zip Aviation). HeliNY’s Linden night window runs Friday through Monday evenings. FlyNYON also sells sunset and later slots from Kearny.

What are the weight limits for NYC helicopter tours?

They depend on the operator. HeliNY’s limit is 275 pounds per passenger and it cannot fly anyone who needs a seat belt extender. FlyNYON’s limit is 350 pounds, and anyone over 310 pounds including gear must buy a second seat. Every operator weighs passengers at check-in and assigns seats by weight and balance, so ask before you book if you are close to a limit.

Can children go on NYC helicopter tours?

Yes. At HeliNY, children 2 and older pay full price because they need their own seat, and children under 2 fly free on an adult’s lap. FlyNYON allows lap children under 2 on doors-on flights only, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign a consent form.

Are helicopter tours canceled in bad weather?

Often, yes. Light rain may not stop a flight, but heavy rain, fog, low clouds and strong wind will. HeliNY tries to rebook weather cancellations. FlyNYON makes a go or no-go call about four hours before departure and issues a voucher good for 12 months, with optional weather insurance if you want a refund instead. Book early in your trip so you have days to reschedule.

What should you wear on a helicopter tour?

On doors-on flights, wear whatever is comfortable and leave bags, hats and scarves in the free lockers. On doors-off flights, dress for wind: fitted layers, closed shoes with laces or straps (no flip-flops or slip-ons), and real winter gear from November to March. Skip anything loose that could blow around in the cabin.

How do I book a private helicopter tour in NYC for 2?

From Manhattan, the only way to fly alone is to buy every seat in the aircraft. HeliNY prices private flights from about $2,200. From Westchester County Airport, private couples’ flights for two are sold from about $995 on GetYourGuide, with optional pickup in Manhattan. Proposal packages with a photographer and flowers run about $3,450 and up.

Do NYC helicopter tours charge a heliport fee?

Yes, for Manhattan departures. Zip Aviation adds a $40 per person heliport fee and HeliNY adds a $45 per person facility and fuel charge on top of the advertised fare. Some third-party listings now include the fee in the price you see. Check the total at checkout before you compare tours.

Should I depart from Manhattan or New Jersey?

Depart from Manhattan if you want the easiest trip there, a subway ride to South Ferry, and a classic daytime route. Choose New Jersey if you want a night flight, a doors-off flight, a Sunday flight or longer time in the air. The New Jersey trip can add 45 to 90 minutes each way, plus a rideshare or train fare.

Are NYC helicopter tours safe?

Sightseeing flights carry real but small risk, like any small-aircraft flight. New York has had fatal tour crashes, most recently the April 2025 Hudson River crash that killed six people, after which the FAA shut down that operator. Operators are overseen by the FAA, and some add independent safety audits. HeliNY, for example, holds TOPS and Wyvern Wingman certifications. Book with an established operator that owns and runs its own aircraft, and ask who is actually flying you.

Is a helicopter tour better than an observation deck?

They do different things. A helicopter gives you the harbor, the Statue of Liberty and the whole island’s length in one sweep, for about $300 and 15 minutes in the air. An observation deck costs a fraction of that, lets you stay as long as you want and puts you in the middle of Midtown’s towers. If the budget allows only one, most first-timers get more from a deck plus a harbor cruise.

Do NYC helicopter tours fly on Sundays?

Not from Manhattan. City rules bar sightseeing flights from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport on Sundays. New Jersey operators do fly on Sundays, including HeliNY at Linden and FlyNYON at Kearny, so a Sunday flight means a trip across the river.

Do helicopter tours fly over Central Park?

Flights from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport don’t. City rules keep those tour flights over the water, so you see Central Park from the Hudson River side. New Jersey operators aren’t bound by that heliport agreement, and FlyNYON says its longer doors-off flight can reach Central Park, routes and conditions permitting.
