Mix and Master on Broadway
Dominique Morisseau’s new play drops the needle in the Bronx’s last record shop. Kara Young and Ruben Santiago-Hudson star, with live DJ sets, for eight winter weeks only.
Dominique Morisseau’s new play Mix and Master comes to Broadway at the Todd Haimes Theatre in a limited Roundabout Theatre Company run, starting with previews on January 5, 2027. Kamilah Forbes directs Tony winners Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Kara Young in a story set inside the last record shop in the Bronx, where hip-hop, jazz and a generational standoff collide. It opens January 27 and is scheduled to close February 28. That’s a short window, so this guide covers what you need to decide fast: tickets, cast, dates, discounts, and how to plan the night.

Is Mix and Master Right for Your Broadway Night?
Play people
A new Morisseau script with two Tony-winning actors is about as strong a pedigree as a straight play gets this season.
Music heads
Crate diggers, DJs and anyone who grew up on hip-hop or jazz will hear their own arguments onstage.
Kara Young fans
Young is coming off back-to-back Tony wins. This is a chance to see her in a brand-new role, close up.
Think it through if…
You want a big musical spectacle, or you’re bringing kids. Age guidance hasn’t been posted yet.

Mix and Master Broadway Tickets
Mix and Master tickets cover roughly eight weeks of performances, and that’s the whole story on timing. A limited run at a mid-size Roundabout house doesn’t leave much room to wait for “later.” The listings on this page show what’s available right now across previews and post-opening dates.
Previews · Jan 5–26
You see the play before the critics do, while it’s still being tightened. Preview seats often sit at a lower price point than post-opening performances, but that varies, so compare the actual listings.
After opening · Jan 27–Feb 28
This is the locked production, and the reviews will be out. If buzz builds, the final weeks of a limited run are usually the hardest seats to find.
Midweek performances are generally easier to book than Friday and Saturday nights. If you’re 18 to 40, read the Hiptix section below before paying full price.
What Is Mix and Master About?
The last record shop in the Bronx is closing. A rising DJ refuses to let it, and the music inside it, go quietly. Roundabout describes the Mix and Master play as a clash between generations that starts as a fight over a store and becomes a reckoning over legacy, survival and staying true to the culture.
That’s what’s been made public, and we’ll leave it there. Plot details beyond the official description haven’t been released, and this page won’t guess at them before previews.
The Bronx Record Shop at the Center of Mix and Master
Setting a play in a Bronx record shop isn’t a random backdrop. The borough is where hip-hop was born, and neighborhood record stores were where the music got passed hand to hand: where DJs dug for breaks and older heads had opinions about all of it. A shop like that is part archive, part hangout, part argument.
Making it the last shop puts real pressure on the story from the first scene. The fight isn’t abstract. It’s about rent, stock on the shelves, and who gets to decide what the place means once the doors close.
Hip-Hop, Jazz and Generational Conflict
Jazz and hip-hop have always been in conversation. Hip-hop producers built entire records out of jazz samples, and older musicians have spent decades debating whether that counts as tribute or theft. Mix and Master puts that argument in a room between generations, which is exactly where it usually happens in real life.
Jazz
Craft, lineage, the masters who came first, and the records worth protecting.
Hip-Hop
Reinvention, the crate as a toolbox, and a new generation keeping the culture moving.
For anyone searching for a hip-hop play on Broadway this winter, this is the one built from the inside of the culture rather than borrowing its style.
Live DJ Sets in Mix and Master
Roundabout and the season announcement both confirm the production includes live DJ sets. That’s rare for a straight play, and it means the music isn’t just underscoring. It happens in the room with you.
How the sets are staged and when they come in haven’t been detailed yet. Expect the sound to be part of the experience in a way most plays don’t attempt, and check back after previews start for specifics.

Mix and Master Broadway Cast
Two Tony winners lead the Mix and Master Broadway cast. It’s a pairing built for Kara Young Broadway fans and for anyone who has followed Ruben Santiago-Hudson on Broadway as an actor, writer and director.
Ruben Santiago-Hudson
as RedA Tony winner and one of the most respected theater artists of his generation, as an actor, writer and director. Casting Ruben Santiago-Hudson puts a true heavyweight behind the counter.
Kara Young
as LonnieKara Young made Broadway history with back-to-back Tony Awards, for Purlie Victorious and Purpose. She’s one of the most in-demand stage actors working, and Mix and Master is her next Broadway role.
Roundabout lists these two leads so far. Any additional casting will be added here as it’s announced.

Dominique Morisseau’s New Broadway Play
Dominique Morisseau is a MacArthur Fellow whose plays tend to live where work, community and Black American life meet. She wrote Skeleton Crew, which played Broadway in 2022, and the book for Ain’t Too Proud. Mix and Master is a new work rather than a revival or transfer, which makes this run the first chance to see it.
Directed by Kamilah Forbes
Kamilah Forbes is the executive producer of the Apollo Theater in Harlem and directed Between the World and Me, onstage at the Apollo and in its HBO adaptation. Pairing Harlem’s most famous music venue’s top creative with a play about a Bronx record shop is a strong fit on paper.
Mix and Master at Roundabout Theatre Company
Mix and Master is a Roundabout production, part of the nonprofit’s 2026–2027 season. Roundabout runs the Todd Haimes Theatre as its Broadway home, so tickets, subscriptions and Hiptix all go through Roundabout’s own system. If you’re searching Mix and Master Roundabout, that’s the same show at the same theater.
