Seven Guitars Tickets & 2026 Lincoln Center Revival Guide
August Wilson’s Seven Guitars is back in New York for a nine-week revival at Lincoln Center Theater, with Russell Hornsby as Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, a Tony winner from the original Broadway cast, directing.
Seven voices, one Hill District backyard, nine weeks at Lincoln Center.
August Wilson’s Seven Guitars returns to New York in a limited Off-Broadway revival at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Previews begin November 5, 2026, opening night is November 23, and the run ends January 10, 2027. That’s nine weeks, in a small house, with a seriously deep ensemble.
This guide covers Seven Guitars tickets for the Lincoln Center run, plus the cast, the story (spoiler-light), where the play fits in Wilson’s Century Cycle and how to plan a night on the Upper West Side. One quick clarification, since it trips people up: this production is by August Wilson but not at the August Wilson Theatre. It’s at Lincoln Center.
A big-hearted, funny, heartbreaking ensemble play about a blues guitarist and the people in his backyard.
Serious theatergoers, August Wilson fans, and anyone who loves great acting up close.
The director won a Tony in this play in 1996. Now he’s staging it.
Nine weeks in a room of about 300 seats. Good dates won’t sit around.
Seven Guitars Tickets
Every ticket on sale right now is for the Seven Guitars Lincoln Center revival, Nov 5, 2026 through Jan 10, 2027. The Newhouse holds roughly 300 people, which is small for a production with this much attention on it, and LCT members get first crack at seats. Inventory and prices move performance by performance, so expect a gap between a quiet weeknight and a holiday-week Saturday.
- Need a specific date or seat? Buy earlier rather than later. There’s a hard end date, and no extension has been announced.
- Flexible? Compare several performances. Weeknights in previews and mid-run are the most likely places to find better seats.
- Small room, close seats. At the Newhouse there isn’t really a far seat. Our Mitzi E. Newhouse seating guide breaks down the room.
Discount Seven Guitars tickets
Lincoln Center Theater runs LincTix, its low-cost ticket program for theatergoers ages 21 to 35. Check LCT for current pricing and whether seats are available for this show. Beyond that, no show-specific rush or lottery had been announced as of early October, so be skeptical of anyone advertising one. TDF members and the TKTS booths are worth a look closer to your date, though Lincoln Center productions don’t always turn up there. Our last-minute tickets guide explains how those work.

When Should You Buy Seven Guitars Tickets?
Previews
See it before the reviews and the buzz. The production is still settling, which some theatergoers love being part of.
Opening & reviews
Reviews land with opening night. A strong response in a 300-seat room can tighten the remaining run fast.
Holiday crowds
Visitor season peaks across the city. Holiday-week dates are the ones to lock in early.
Final week
Closing weeks of a well-reviewed limited run are rarely quiet. Don’t leave it to the last weekend.
Seven Guitars Performance Dates
Lincoln Center Theater sets its weekly performance calendar by date, so check the curtain time for the night you want in the ticket calendar rather than assuming a fixed schedule, especially around Thanksgiving and the holidays.
Seven Guitars runtime
The runtime for the 2026 Lincoln Center Theater production hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. We’ll update this section once LCT posts it. Until then, plan for a full evening. Wilson’s plays are rarely short, and this one has two acts.

Seven Guitars Cast
Seven actors, one backyard. This is the 2026 Lincoln Center company.
Russell Hornsby
The guitarist at the center of it all: talented, broke, charming and running out of patience. Hornsby is known on screen for The Hate U Give.
Kristolyn Lloyd
The woman Floyd left behind and is now trying to win back. Lloyd originated Alana in Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen.
John Douglas Thompson
The yard’s prophet, an older neighbor full of visions and grievances. Thompson was in Santiago-Hudson’s Tony-winning 2017 Jitney revival on Broadway.
Daniel J. Watts
Floyd’s harmonica player and sharpest critic, and the role Santiago-Hudson won his Tony for. Watts was Tony-nominated as Ike in Tina.
Michael Potts
The drummer and the band’s easygoing heart. Potts was in the original Book of Mormon company and the film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Chanté Adams
Louise’s niece, newly arrived from Alabama and turning every head in the yard.
Roslyn Ruff
Vera’s upstairs neighbor, sharp-tongued and unimpressed by men with plans.
Cast update: Daniel J. Watts took over Canewell on September 21, replacing the originally announced Jason Dirden. Creative team: direction by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, choreography by Kenneth L. Roberson, original music by Junior Mack, sets by Michael Carnahan, costumes by Karen Perry, lighting by Rui Rita, sound by Justin Ellington.
What Is Seven Guitars About?
It’s 1948 in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Floyd Barton has a record getting played on the radio and a chance to go back to Chicago for another session. All he needs is money, his guitar out of the pawnshop, and Vera willing to come with him this time. Over a few days in a shared backyard, Floyd, his bandmates and their neighbors cook, argue, drink, dance and play cards, and talk about everything from boxing to who’s owed what.
It’s one of Wilson’s most musical plays and one of his funniest. Underneath the banter it’s about ambition, love, artistry and how much a Black man in 1940s America could expect the world to give back for his talent. We’ll stop there. The play rewards walking in without the details.
Who is Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton?
Floyd is a blues guitarist who believes this is his moment. He’s magnetic, impatient and absolutely sure he’s owed a break. His relationship with Vera, whom he left once and wants back, drives a lot of the play, and so does his fight to be paid what his music is worth. He’s one of the great roles in Wilson’s canon, and the production is built around Russell Hornsby in it.
Ruben Santiago-Hudson Returns to Seven Guitars
When Seven Guitars opened on Broadway in 1996, Ruben Santiago-Hudson played Canewell and won the Tony Award for it. Thirty years later he’s back as director.
Few artists working today are as closely tied to Wilson’s plays. Santiago-Hudson directed the 2017 Broadway revival of Jitney, which won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play, and he has spent decades acting in and staging Wilson’s work. Having someone who once stood in that backyard now running the production is the single best reason to take this revival seriously.
Seven Guitars and August Wilson’s Century Cycle
Seven Guitars is one of the ten plays in August Wilson’s Century Cycle (also called the Pittsburgh Cycle). Each play is set in a different decade of the 20th century, and together they trace Black American life across that century. All but one are set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Seven Guitars is the 1940s play.
If you’re working through the cycle, our guide to Joe Turner’s Come and Gone covers the 1910s play.
Why This Seven Guitars Revival Is Notable
- The director’s history with the play. Santiago-Hudson won a Tony in the original production and now directs the revival.
- An ensemble built for Wilson. Hornsby, Thompson, Potts, Lloyd, Adams, Ruff and Watts are an unusually deep company for a 300-seat house.
- The room. The Newhouse puts you a few feet from the action, which suits a play that lives in a backyard.
- A short window. Nine weeks, then it’s gone.
