Christopher Gattelli, who won a Tony for choreographing Newsies, directs and choreographs. This isn’t a recreation of the old Sullivan Street staging. It’s a deliberate rethink of how the fable plays in 2026, produced by Second Stage at its Broadway house, the Hayes.

The young lovers are now two young men, Matt and Lewis, and the two meddling fathers are now two mothers. The score, the themes and the show’s bare-stage, storybook style are still there.

What Is The Fantasticks About?

Two neighbors’ kids fall for each other across a wall. What they don’t know is that their parents built the wall on purpose. The parents pretend to feud because they figure forbidden love is the surest kind. To seal the deal, they hire El Gallo, a charming showman-bandit, to stage a fake abduction so one boy can play the hero.

The first act is moonlight and romance. The second is what happens when the sun comes up. It’s a small, wry fable about growing up, getting hurt, and deciding whether love is still worth it. It’s told with a bare stage, a few props and a lot of theatrical imagination.
