Shifters is the North American premiere of Benedict Lombe’s critically acclaimed Black British love story, playing Cherry Lane Theatre in the West Village from July 6 through August 30, 2026. The play follows Dre and Des — young, gifted and Black — who meet at high school, fall apart, and then come crashing back into each other’s lives years later at his grandmother’s funeral. Heather Agyepong reprises her Olivier Award-nominated role; Daniel Ezra joins as Dre. What Is Shifters About?
Dre and Des meet through their school debating society. He’s from a working-class estate; she’s the daughter of a neurologist. They fall in love the way people do when they’re young and the future feels infinite. Then she leaves — to America, to art, to a different version of her life — and he stays. Eight years later, his grandmother dies, and Des comes back for the funeral. What was buried comes back up.
The play moves fluidly between the present — the two of them trying to figure out what they still mean to each other — and the past, revisiting the relationship with the particular intensity of remembered love. New secrets, old wounds, and the question underneath everything: can two people recover the versions of themselves they were before distance changed them?
What makes Shifters land harder than most romance plays is that Benedict Lombe wrote it with specific intentionality about whose story gets to be told. As Lombe has said publicly: “Who gets to be viewed and celebrated as a romantic lead? Whose cultures and histories are brought into focus? Who gets to be audacious? Who gets to be complex and flawed and funny and intelligent and joyful and fully human?” Shifters was her answer. A love story between a British Congolese woman and a British Nigerian man, written because that story deserved to exist.
Shifters is not about whether Dre and Des still love each other. It is about whether two people can ever return to the version of themselves that first learned how to love — and whether the distance between who they were and who they’ve become is something love can actually cross.
